Serial Thief Who Stole Kristi Noem's Handbag Sentenced to Three Years in Prison
Mario Bustamante Leiva, 50, a Chilean national, has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's handbag from under her seat at Capital Burger restaurant in Washington DC last April. The Gucci bag contained $3,000 cash, her driver's licence, passport and DHS access badge. Leiva pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud and one count of first-degree theft. He used a coat to hide his pickpocketing and made purchases with victims' stolen credit cards within minutes. He faces deportation after serving his sentence.
