South Korea transformed from having severely degraded forests in 1960 (10.6 cubic meters/ha) to a greener landscape by 1999 (60.3 cubic meters/ha) through a massive reforestation effort, planting over 12 billion trees and reforesting 4.5 million hectares by 1992, but faces new challenges in maintaining diverse, resilient forests.
