Vietnam joins rush for India’s battle-tested BrahMos missiles

Vietnam has become the latest country to enter talks to buy India’s supersonic BrahMos missile – and at least 15 more are reportedly interested – as defence ministries across Asia and elsewhere increasingly look beyond Western-made systems. New Delhi and Hanoi are in advanced negotiations over a potential US$700 million deal, with talks progressing during Vietnamese President To Lam’s visit to India this week, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other...

Vietnam burns red tape but growth may be harder to rekindle

A bonfire of red tape to unleash investment and complete stalled projects across Vietnam may drive economic expansion but is unlikely to offset the damage caused by US tariffs and the fuel crisis which have threatened the country’s growth ambitions. Vietnam’s Communist Party General-Secretary and President To Lam, the most powerful leader in a generation, has set an annual growth target of 10 per cent until 2030 to galvanise a nation whose ponderous bureaucracy has snarled private investment and...

Vietnam, India seek closer ties to hedge against dependence on superpowers

A visit by Vietnam’s leader to India is set to enhance New Delhi’s growing influence with Hanoi while allowing the Southeast Asian country to hedge against China in the event of any escalation in maritime disputes. Vietnamese President To Lam’s trip underscores concerns from both countries of being “overly dependent” on any superpower, according to political analysts. Lam arrived in Delhi on Tuesday for a three-day visit, marking his first trip to India since assuming office. The visit coincides...

Miliband reveals he warned Lammy that Mandelson ambassador appointment could 'blow up'

Ed Miliband has revealed he warned David Lammy that Peter Mandelson's appointment as UK ambassador to Washington could "blow up", expressing concerns about Mandelson's links to Jeffrey Epstein and his lobbying firm's Chinese and Russian business ties. Mandelson was sacked after nine months following disclosures about his relationship with the late financier and child sex offender. The Guardian revealed he failed initial security vetting, which was overruled by the Foreign Office, leading to the sacking of FCDO permanent secretary Oliver Robbins.
