The number of academicians from China's leading scientific and engineering institutes in the Communist Party's Central Committee has doubled over a decade, rising from 15 (3.5%) in the 18th Committee in 2012 to 30 (8%) in the 20th Committee in 2022, including seven full members. This marks a significant shift, as scientists historically had limited direct representation and typically served as consultants rather than decision-makers.
