India May Not Mandate Higher Ethanol Blending Immediately, Opts for Flex Fuel Vehicle Promotion

India is considering promoting flex fuel vehicles instead of immediately mandating higher ethanol blending (beyond E20) due to concerns about damaging existing vehicle engines. While standards for E22-E30 are being prepared, trials for E25 vehicles are underway. Auto industry experts suggest offering separate dispensers for different blends to allow consumer choice.

India Should Aim for 100% Ethanol Blending, Says Minister Gadkari

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has urged India to achieve 100% ethanol blending in the near future, citing vulnerabilities in oil exports due to the West Asia crisis. Currently, India imports 87% of its oil requirements, spending Rs 22 lakh crore on fossil fuel imports. The minister highlighted E20 petrol (20% ethanol blend) launched by PM Narendra Modi in 2023, and noted that green hydrogen is the fuel of the future, with a need to produce it at USD 1 per kg to make India an energy exporter.
