China's "Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress," set to take effect July 1, is being criticized by civil groups as a tool for forced assimilation and cultural cleansing, particularly targeting ethnic minorities and threatening Taiwan's autonomy by leveraging the similarity between "Chinese Nation" and "Republic of China."
A dragon boat race promoting ethnic unity was held at Shanghai Second Industry University, with nearly 100 ethnic minority participants. The event is part of a broader initiative by Shanghai's education system to foster integration among students from diverse backgrounds.
In Yunnan's Lushi City, a group of "Shared Grandmas" over 60 provides childcare and elderly support, fostering ethnic unity in a multi-ethnic community. Established in January 2025, this initiative addresses the needs of working families and isolated seniors, strengthening community bonds.
Tibet is deepening its efforts to foster ethnic unity, focusing on building a strong sense of community among all ethnic groups. The region has seen success in creating demonstration zones and units, promoting inter-ethnic integration, and strengthening legal frameworks to support these initiatives.
