Stock markets are wobbling, but £10bn cash bids at fat premiums can still happen

A Swedish firm’s pursuit of the product testing company Intertek suggests investors’ price expectations are yet to be shifted by the Iran warIt was a bad day for the FTSE 100 index on Tuesday – down 1.4% – but the puzzle in many quarters is why share prices haven’t fallen further since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran. The index is still up by a couple of percentage points since new year, which is not a bet most would have made at the time if they had been told an inflationary energy price shock lay around the corner. An absence of Iran-related corporate profits warnings partly explains the relative resilience, even if those usually take a while to arrive. So, too, the fact that the Footsie is overpopulated with overseas earners for whom the US economy, which isn’t suffering Europe’s soaring natural gas prices, matters more than their home market. United Utilities shares surge 11% as Ofwat settlement proves more generous than expected

United Utilities share price jumped 11% after the water company announced an £800m share placing with Future Fund and Atlas as cornerstone investors. Ofwat's regulatory settlement a year ago has proven more generous than initially thought, particularly for companies not incurring heavy pollution fines. UU now targets 10-11% return on equity and seeks to spend an additional £2.5bn on infrastructure, potentially adding £10 to household bills. Severn Trent rose 7% in sympathy, with both companies at all-time highs.

Big Tech AI Spending Sends Share Prices Volatile as Companies Plan Over $500 Billion Investment

Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon reported Q1 results showing divergent market reactions as investors assess massive AI spending plans. Meta plans to spend up to $145bn on AI this year, while Amazon will spend $185bn, more than double 2025. Meta shares slumped over 5% before recovering, Alphabet jumped nearly 6% on strong Google Cloud growth, and Microsoft and Amazon saw modest declines. Analysts note ongoing anxiety about AI boom sustainability given high costs and unrealized gains, but companies continue betting billions on AI development.

Oil hits highest level since US-Iran ceasefire began, as conflict hurts Gulf crude production – business live

Brent crude hits highest level since the US and Iran first agreed a ceasefire in early AprilRetail sales rise in Britain after Iran war prompted ‘panic at the pumps’Trump says he will ‘probably put a big tariff on the UK’ if it doesn’t drop digital services taxSarah Breeden’s warning that share prices do not reflect the many risks facing the global economy may have pushed the market down this morning, suggests Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell.He explains:The stock market reflects what investors think will happen in the future. While markets have been wobbly since the Middle East conflict unfolded, they didn’t pull back sharply in the early stages of the crisis, and more recently they’ve shown resilience. That suggests investors are confident the war will end quickly, and elevated oil and gas prices will retreat as supply is restored.Oil prices currently trade at $105 per barrel which is higher than the sub-$70 price seen at the start of 2026, but below the $120+ level when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. One could argue current oil prices are high enough to cause pain for businesses and consumers as everything becomes more expensive. There are already signs it is causing problems for companies as they report cautious outlook statements.Companies are considerably more pessimistic about the coming months. The German economy is being hit hard by the Iran crisis.
