県によると、この山林に今年1月に植えられたサガンスギの苗3150本のうち86本がなくなっているのを、5月25日に多久市が委託している業者が巡回中に確認した。スギの高さは30～50センチで、引き抜くように持ち去られていた。市が警察へ被害届を提出した。
サガンスギは県が1965年から品種開発に取り組んできた。従来のスギに比べ1.5倍の早さで成長し、約30年で木材として利用できるほか、強度も1.5倍という。さらに花粉量が従来品種の半分以下で、3拍子をあわせもつ全国初のスギとして2021年に品種登録された。
県は苗が県外に持ち出されないように「門外不出」で大切に育ててきた。22年2月に苗の出荷が始まり、約14万9千本が県内7市町に植えられた。県は県内のスギをすべてサガンスギにする「サガンスギの森林100年構想」も掲げている。
苗木は従来種より割高の1本225円で、今回の被害額は概算で1万9350円。苗木を見ただけでサガンスギと判別するのは難しいという。抜き去りの被害は初めてで、県は林業関係者に注意を呼びかけている。
