南投分署這幾年在南投、雲林及嘉義山區推動退竹還林，伐除老竹林改種本土深根性樹種及各種蜜源植物；為善用伐除的竹材及木材，南投分署與湖山水庫人文生態保育協會合作，繼開辦竹藝創作課後，再開辦木工坊推動「國產材木作教育暨生態巢箱推廣計畫」，透過國產材木作課程與生態教育，帶領民眾親手打造人工生態巢箱。
南投分署指出，湖山水庫周邊淺山樹木林立，早期設置的巢箱多已老化毀損，與協會成員討論後，邀請民眾化身森林建築師，為野生動物打造人工生態巢箱，材料由南投分署提供在地國產柳杉，讓野生動物棲息的家，同時也推廣國產材利用。
湖山水庫人文生態保護協會理事長蔡孟言表示，木作工作坊邀請專業木工師傅，從裁切、組裝打造專屬的人工生態巢箱，再由專業人員透過攀樹方式把巢箱架在森林環境中，提供野生動物棲息。
南投分署指出，目前已在雲林的斗六、古坑及嘉義縣竹崎公園等10處地點，架設15個巢箱，監測成果顯示，已有3個巢箱觀察到大赤鼯鼠入住及繁殖，另有2個觀察到領角鴞利用，可見巢箱是具有生態效益，參與巢箱製作的民眾，得知自己做得巢箱有野生動物入住，都很開心。
