A spotter had initially picked up the 38-year-old golfer’s first tee shot, believing it had gone out of bounds, a decision that was disputed. There was no immediate agreement on where the ball should be placed.
Officials instructed Hur to play his second ball, with the understanding that a definitive ruling would be made after the round. The delay in this decision, coupled with Hur's choice to sign for a score that he should have recognized as potentially incorrect, led to the situation.
In a statement, the Tour, which co-sanctioned the event with the KGA, acknowledged the “timing and communication of a ruling that ultimately impacted the outcome of the tournament”.
