Canada has joined the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) as its first observer nation, marking the first expansion of the sixth-generation fighter jet initiative beyond its three founding members. The move gives Canada privileged access to the UK-, Italy- and Japan-led programme, allowing it to participate in discussions on capability development, industrial collaboration and long-term delivery plans, although it does not involve any financial commitment at this stage. The Global Combat Air Programme was launched in 2022 by the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan to develop a next-generation stealth fighter aircraft by 2035. The project is being led by Britain's BAE Systems, Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Italy's Leonardo. The announcement was made on Tuesday as Britain's new defence secretary Wes Streeting hosted his counterparts from Japan, Italy and Canada during the Farnborough Airshow.

According to Reuters, Canada's observer status is part of Prime Minister Mark Carney's broader strategy to diversify the country's defence partnerships beyond the United States and strengthen ties with European allies and other like-minded nations. As an observer, Canada will gain direct insight into the programme's development, technological roadmap and industrial cooperation. While the current arrangement carries no financial obligations, it could pave the way for Canada to become a full partner in the future by contributing to development costs and potentially procuring the aircraft. Canadian defence minister David McGuinty had earlier told Reuters during a visit to Tokyo that he discussed GCAP with his Japanese counterpart to better understand what he described as a "promising initiative".

GCAP is one of the world's two major Western sixth-generation fighter aircraft programmes, alongside the US Air Force's Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) programme. The fighter jet is being designed to operate alongside existing fifth-generation platforms such as the F-35 while incorporating advanced stealth, sensors and next-generation technologies. Welcoming Canada's participation, Britain's defence secretary Wes Streeting said the programme would continue strengthening security while supporting technological innovation and high-skilled jobs. "GCAP continues to strengthen our security, drive technological innovation and create highly skilled jobs across the UK," Streeting said. "We are proud to welcome Canada to this new phase of engagement and look forward to sharing expertise and working on technological advances as we continue to deliver this groundbreaking programme."

The announcement coincided with the Farnborough Airshow, where defence and aerospace companies have showcased next-generation military technologies amid rising global security concerns, according to Reuters. The background developments also reflect growing efforts among European allies to reduce reliance on US military technology and strengthen indigenous defence capabilities. Canada's inclusion represents the first expansion of GCAP since its launch in 2022 and highlights the programme's increasing international appeal as countries seek to modernise their air forces with sixth-generation combat aircraft.
