None of these alternative routes has advanced beyond the study stage, largely for the same cost and environmental concerns that have followed the project since its earliest conception.

A dream that keeps resurfacing after a century

Despite repeated feasibility studies stretching from the 1920s through the 1970s and beyond, the Qattara Depression project remains unbuilt more than a hundred years after it was first proposed. Its scale, drawing comparisons to Egypt's own Aswan High Dam, continues to attract periodic interest from engineers and policymakers looking for large-scale renewable energy solutions, even as the same fundamental challenges of cost, excavation scale and environmental impact have prevented any version of the plan from moving past the drawing board.
