Yazı boyutu

Egypt created a historic milestone on Sunday night as they registered their first-ever World Cup victory, defeating New Zealand 3-1 in a Group G clash at BC Place, Vancouver. Star forward Mohamed Salah once again delivered on the biggest stage, scoring the decisive go-ahead goal as Egypt turned a spirited performance into a landmark result. The win sent the Pharaohs to the top of the group standings, although qualification for the knockout stage is still not guaranteed. Egypt will now face Iran in a crucial final group match in Seattle, needing at least a draw to progress further in the tournament.

Salah delivers when it matters most

The match belonged to Salah in the decisive moments. The Egyptian captain struck in the 67th minute, finishing off a clever back-heel assist from Mostafa Zico to put his side ahead for the first time in the contest. The goal marked Salah’s 68th international strike, and he celebrated with a trademark fist pump before being engulfed by teammates and roaring fans in the sold-out stadium. Earlier, Salah had gone close in the first half when Omar Marmoush set him up from a free-kick routine, but his effort drifted narrowly wide into the side netting. When he was substituted in the 85th minute, the Liverpool forward received a standing ovation from all corners of the stadium in recognition of his match-defining performance.

Comeback completed as Egypt dominate second half

New Zealand had initially stunned Egypt by taking the lead in the 15th minute through Finn Surman, who powered in a header from a Tim Payne corner. The All Whites, however, could not sustain their advantage as Egypt gradually took control. Mostafa Ziko levelled the match in the 58th minute with a well-placed header that the goalkeeper managed to get a hand to but could not keep out. Zico then turned provider for Salah’s winner, capping a decisive second-half surge. Trezeguet sealed the victory in the 82nd minute with a diving header, ensuring Egypt would not be denied their historic moment.

Group G race wide open

With the win, Egypt move into a strong position in Group G but remain under pressure heading into their final group fixture against Iran. New Zealand, meanwhile, remain winless in the tournament and will face Belgium next in Vancouver. Elsewhere in the group, Belgium and Iran played out a goalless draw, leaving the qualification race finely poised as the final round of matches approaches.
