Il s’agit de la catastrophe minière la plus dramatique qu’ait connue le pays depuis dix-sept ans.

Quelque 247 mineurs se trouvaient sous terre, mobilisés à l’origine entre 14 heures à minuit, lorsque le coup de grisou s’est produit. Un demi-millier de secouristes ont été dépêchés sur place, selon les autorités du comté de Qinyuan. Des canoës ont été acheminés jusqu’à 300 mètres sous la surface du sol pour évoluer à travers trois galeries inondées. D’après des témoignages recueillis par le journal officiel Zhongguo Xinwen Zhoukan (« Chine hebdomadaire »), les plans des galeries fournis par les responsables de la mine ne correspondaient pas à la réalité.
