Neden Önemli?

FIFA has nearly doubled the total prize pool for the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup to $871 million, with the winners set to receive $51 million, a substantial increase from previous tournaments.

Yazı boyutu

When Argentina and Spain walk onto the pitch for Sunday's FIFA World Cup final, history, immortality and football's most coveted trophy will all be at stake. But alongside the glory comes a massive financial reward. The winners of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will receive a staggering $51 million in prize money, the biggest champion's payout in tournament history, while the runners-up will take home $34 million, according to an AP report. This year's edition has already broken records off the field, with FIFA distributing a historic $871 million among the 48 participating nations — nearly double the $440 million prize pool from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. For either defending champions Argentina or Spain, lifting the trophy will also mean receiving World Cup championship rings for the first time, along with football's ultimate prize and a place in sporting history.

FIFA nearly doubles prize pool for expanded 48-team World Cup

The expanded 48-team tournament has prompted FIFA to significantly increase its financial commitment. The governing body added more than $100 million to the overall prize fund earlier this year after several national federations, particularly from Europe, argued that rising travel and accommodation costs across the United States, Canada and Mexico made the original distribution insufficient. Every one of the 48 participating teams is guaranteed at least $12.5 million. That includes:

$10 million for qualifying and participating in the group stage.

$2.5 million to cover pre-tournament preparation, training camps and related expenses.

The preparation grant was introduced to avoid disputes between players and national federations over bonuses before major tournaments.

Complete FIFA World Cup 2026 prize money

The deeper a team progressed, the bigger the financial reward.

Champions: $51 million

Runners-up: $34 million

Third place (England): $30 million

Fourth place (France): $28 million

Quarter-finalists: $20 million each

Round of 16: $16 million each

Round of 32: $12 million each

Group-stage teams (33rd-48th): $10 million each

The winners' payout represents a substantial increase from the $42 million earned by Argentina after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Prize money isn't paid directly to players

Despite the eye-catching figures, FIFA pays the prize money to each country's football federation—not directly to the players. How the money is distributed depends entirely on the federation's own policies and agreements with players. Apart from prize money, FIFA also covers a significant portion of every team's tournament expenses. The governing body pays for business-class return flights, accommodation for a 50-member delegation, domestic travel within the host nations and a dedicated fleet of vehicles, including an equipment truck. National federations remain responsible for insurance, additional delegation members and incidental hotel expenses.
