Illegal Immigrant Arrested in California on Prior Serious Charges

An illegal immigrant working as an agricultural labourer in Southern California has been arrested after US border authorities said he had previously faced multiple serious criminal charges, including rape and sodomy of a drugged victim. US Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) El Centro Sector said its agents arrested the Mexican national while he was working in Thermal, a farming community in Riverside County, California. The agency did not identify the man but shared his photograph on social media. According to CBP, the man had previously been charged with rape and sodomy of a drugged victim, assault with a deadly weapon, and preventing or dissuading a witness or victim. "Our agents from the Indio Station arrested an illegal alien from Mexico working as an agricultural worker in Thermal, CA," the agency said in a post on Instagram. Thermal, located about 25 miles southeast of Palm Springs in the Coachella Valley, is home to several agricultural operations, including farms producing dates and specialty crops. The arrest drew mixed reactions online, with some users praising the authorities and others commenting on the suspect's appearance. Immigration enforcement has remained a contentious issue in the Coachella Valley. Earlier this year, local lawmakers and immigrant rights advocates criticised federal enforcement operations in the region, arguing that they had disrupted families and businesses. Congressman Raul Ruiz had described the situation as a "public health crisis", saying parents had been detained, businesses had lost workers, and families were struggling to locate detained relatives. The arrest comes days after another immigration-related case involving an Indian national. An Indian national, Deepak Kumar, 31, of Fresno, California, is in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after Pennsylvania authorities accused him of transporting nearly $3 million worth of stolen tungsten oxide powder. According to The New York Post, investigators tracked a truck carrying 10 pallets of tungsten oxide powder, valued at about $2.86 million, after Mitsubishi Materials Corporation reported the shipment missing. Authorities said Kumar allegedly produced an invalid work visa, a fraudulent New York state driver's licence and a valid California driver's licence when stopped by police. He was arrested on theft-related charges before being transferred to ICE custody in California. Investigators said the industrial material is used in products such as armour-piercing ammunition, ceramics, lasers, optical equipment and specialised window coatings.
