Indian-origin Neel Patel named in Australia's U19 squad for India tour

Indian-origin opening batter Neel Patel has earned one of the biggest opportunities of his young career after being named in Australia's Under-19 squad for next month's multi-format tour of India. The New South Wales youngster is among 16 of Australia's brightest emerging cricketers selected for the four-week tour, which will see the visitors play three one-day matches and two four-day games against India U19 across Rajkot and Ahmedabad from September 13 to October 9. For Patel, the selection marks another significant milestone in a rapidly rising career that has already established him as one of Australia's most exciting teenage batting prospects.

An elegant opening batter who also bowls handy off-spin, Patel has quickly climbed through Australia's junior cricket pathway thanks to his consistency and maturity at the crease. Representing the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Cricket Club, Patel made headlines at just 16 years of age by becoming one of the youngest players in Sydney Premier Cricket First Grade history after scoring more than 1,000 runs in a single calendar year. He has since added a maiden first-grade century to his growing list of achievements. His performances also earned him selection for Cricket Australia's prestigious Under-19 Men's Talent Camp in Adelaide, where he was identified as one of the country's leading young prospects. Currently opening the batting for New South Wales at junior level, Patel is known for his ability to occupy the crease for long periods while keeping the scoreboard moving. Alongside his batting, he contributes with off-spin, making him a valuable all-round option.

Despite his growing reputation, Patel believes there is still plenty of room for improvement. Speaking to Cricket Australia, the teenager revealed he has been working extensively on his back-foot game after receiving advice from his coaches. "Batting wise, it's back-foot stuff. I've been given advice from my coaches on how to work on that," Patel said. "Then also fielding, and the strength and fitness side of the game." One of Patel's most unusual habits is maintaining a detailed OneNote journal documenting every innings he plays. After each match, he records what worked well and where improvements are needed, helping him remain accountable for his development. "I think it's just to stay on track with what I do and just be accountable," Patel explained. "The OneNote keeps track of my performances; what I did well and what I can improve on for every single game, so I'm always learning." Away from cricket, Patel enjoys cooking, playing chess with his father and building LEGO sets to switch off from the game.

Patel's inclusion comes as Cricket Australia announced a 16-player squad featuring some of the nation's most promising youngsters.

The team will be coached by experienced mentor Tim Nielsen, while Cricket Australia Head of National Development Sonya Thompson described the tour as an invaluable opportunity for Australia's next generation. "Touring India and playing against high-quality opposition in challenging conditions will be a valuable experience and test the players technically and mentally across formats," Thompson said. The month-long series is expected to provide a stern examination for Australia's young cricketers, with Patel set to be one of the players in focus as he returns to his family's country of origin hoping to make a lasting impression against one of world cricket's strongest junior sides.
