Iran-US war latest: Key Trump ally raises concern over peace deal as he labels JD Vance its ‘architect’
‘I look forward to reviewing the final product,’ Senator Lindsey Graham wrote on X
One of President Trump’s chief allies on Capitol Hill expressed concern over the newly announced peace deal with Iran, which officials said is poised to bring an end to months of fighting.
Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and backer of the war, wrote on X that he is “somewhat concerned that Iran’s view of the agreement seems different than what the American negotiating team is claiming.”
“I look forward to reviewing the final product and I believe it is imperative that the architect of the deal, Vice President Vance and his negotiating partners, be part of the process in presenting the final deal to Congress,” Graham added.
Earlier on Sunday, Trump announced on Truth Social that the peace deal with Iran is now “complete,” adding that the Strait of Hormuz will immediately be reopened.
At the same time, Iranian state television reported that Iran “forced” the U.S. to accept a peace deal, and that traffic through the Persian Gulf will now be regulated by Iran and Oman, according to Reuters.
Details about the deal remain limited. Some have described it as a final agreement, while others have characterized it as a stepping stone for further negotiations.
A signing ceremony is set to take place on Friday in Switzerland, Pakistani prime minister Shehbaz Sharif said on social media.
Top House Democrat slams Trump after peace deal is annouced
The top Democrat in the House of Representatives heavily criticized President Donald Trump after he announced a peace deal had been reached with Iran.
“President Obama built a global coalition that constrained Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Donald Trump recklessly ripped that agreement up and took us to war,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wrote on X.
“Now gas prices are soaring, Iran is stronger and America is less safe,” he added. “That’s the Trump record.”

Israel's attack on Lebanon cast serious doubt over peace deal
Earlier on Sunday, Iranian negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said Israel's latest attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut, which Israel said targeted Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants, showed the United States lacks "the will and ability to fulfill your commitments" in a post on X.
Iran's foreign ministry said it held the United States responsible for the attack. Iran warned of a "strong response", and its top joint military command said the "finger (is) on the trigger" ready to fire at the "enemy's heart".
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump said: "This morning's attack on Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran." Israel has said it was not party to the planned U.S.-Iran deal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has differed with Trump over American demands that Israel curb its military action in Lebanon to allow the United States to reach a deal with Iran.

Qatari officials call US-Iran agreement 'an important step towards consolidating sustainable peace'
Qatari officials joined those from a number of other nations in welcoming the newly announced agreement between the U.S. and Iran.
“The State of Qatar welcomes the agreement reached on the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran on addressing the outstanding issues between them, including ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and considers it an important step towards consolidating sustainable peace and promoting economic growth regionally and internationally,” Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Sunday.
Some officials have described the agreement as an MOU, which would pave the way for further talks, while others have characterized it as a final deal. Key details are still emerging.

French President Emmanuel Macron says he welcomes peace deal between the US and Iran
French President Emmanuel Macron said he welcomed the peace deal between the U.S. and Iran, calling for it to be implemented rapidly.
“This agreement must enable the urgent and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” he wrote on X, according to an English translation. “The resumption of maritime traffic, without restriction or toll, is an indispensable condition for regional stability and the global economy.”
“This agreement also paves the way for comprehensive negotiations in service of peace and security for all in the Middle East,” Macron continued. “These must address concerns related to Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programs, as well as its policy of regional destabilization. This is how we will be able to build a solid and lasting peace. France is prepared to play its full part, alongside its partners.”
“It will also continue to provide its full support to the determined efforts of the Lebanese authorities to restore the sovereignty of the State, which alone can ensure Lebanon’s stability and territorial integrity and meet the needs of its populations,” he added.

Trump boasts that he achieved what his predecessors could not in Iran
Shortly after declaring a peace deal with Iran “complete,” President Trump boasted that he had achieved what many of his predecessors could not.
“This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region,” Trump wrote on Truth Social at 6:27 p.m. “Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me. The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace.”
“With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World,” he added.

he central question of Iran's nuclear program remains
After the war began, Iran attacked Israel and several Arab Gulf nations with missiles and drones. A ceasefire was reached on April 7.
Ten days later, the U.S. military imposed its blockade.
A historic face-to-face meeting between Vice President JD Vance and Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf ended without success.
Throughout negotiations, Trump alternatively threatened to destroy Iranian infrastructure, even its civilisation, and praised the relationship with Iran as “more professional” as his administration sought an exit from the war with midterm U.S. elections coming later this year.
Iran’s government, with its own tensions around hard-liners as it scrambled to replace several top officials killed in the war, repeatedly expressed wariness of negotiations after rounds of talks last year and early this year ended with U.S. and Israeli attacks.
Tehran has emphasised that it wanted a deal to focus on ending the war, with discussions put off until later on its nuclear program — the issue at the center of it all.

The deal came under criticism even in the final hours
The deal likely returns to a status that existed before the war, but with thousands of people dead and Iran wielding a new source of negotiating pressure with its ability to influence transits of the strait.
The waterway is crucial to significant shipments of oil, natural gas and related products like fertiliser, and its effective closure rocked the global economy.
Of the stated targets by the U.S. and Israel when they launched the war on Feb. 28 with strikes that killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Tehran still has a missile program, support for armed proxies in the region like Hezbollah and a stockpile of highly enriched uranium for its nuclear program.
Khamenei’s son is now supreme leader, though he has not been seen in the public since the war began. His approval was needed for Iran to sign off on the deal.Iran has wanted a ceasefire deal to include the fighting in Lebanon, where Israel has pushed its invasion deeper than at any point in over a quarter-century as it targets Hezbollah.
Tehran also has sought the release of billions of dollars in frozen funds. The emerging deal had been sharply criticized by Israel’s government and by critics in Trump’s own Republican Party.
Some said it did not improve on the terms of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that Trump withdrew the U.S. from during his first term and still describes as “bad.”
There was also apparent friction inside Iran in the hours before the announcement, as the government earlier Sunday warned that any division at home over the deal weakens its negotiating position.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian urged national unity and called it a “disgrace” when someone stands before parliament and calls anyone who negotiates a traitor.
