US Vice President JD Vance stated his Catholic faith influences his opposition to "low-wage foreigners" entering the US, citing the need to protect American workers' dignity and wages. This statement drew criticism, particularly given his wife's Hindu faith.

US vice president JD Vance has come under fire after saying his Catholic faith supports policies that oppose "low-wage foreigners" entering the United States. Soicial media pointed to the fact that his wife, second lady Usha Vance, is an Indian-American and a practising Hindu. Vance made the remarks during an appearance on Fox News' The Ingraham Angle while discussing his new memoir, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, which focuses on his conversion to Catholicism in 2019.

Asked by host Laura Ingraham how his faith influences his decisions in public office, Vance said his religion encourages humility and shapes his approach to policymaking.

"My faith is constantly asking me to have humility about what's going on, so one of the things that I try do Laura, is constantly ask myself 'What've we learned,' 'Has what we learn, is it consistent with what I thought was going to happen or inconsistent with what I thought was going to happen,'" he said.

He added, "I really do think the Christian faith causes political leaders to be humbled because real humility is how is how you learn, is how you learn about other people, it's how you make better decisions over the course of time."

Vance then linked his faith to the Trump administration's economic agenda.

"The other thing I'd say, Laura, is my faith motivates me to remember that our economic policy doesn't exist for corporations, it doesn't exist for Wall Street, as much as we want everybody to be successful, it exists to support the dignity of human beings," he said.

The VP added: "We want every American to be able to raise a family, to be able to support themselves in comfort and in dignity, that's why we're trying to bring investment and manufacturing back to the US"

He continued, "That's why we don't like low-wage foreigners coming in and undercutting the wages of American workers. We want normal Americans to be able to live a dignified life. I think that's a very, very Christian concept."

The clip went viral, where many users accused Vance of misrepresenting Christian teachings. One person wrote, "What faith is that? Jesus literally said 'blessed are the poor.'"

Another personn wrote, "What he's saying, is not the teachings of Jesus."

Another user said, "Jesus Christ was a low wage foreigner."

One comment was more personal: "Like your Hindu wife Usha"?

Usha Vance is the first Hindu second lady of US. An Indian American and the daughter of Indian immigrants, she was raised in a Hindu household in San Diego and is a Yale Law School graduate. Earlier this year, during an interview with CBS News, Usha Vance said she had no plans to convert to Catholicism like his husband. JD Vance later said he hoped she might one day embrace Christianity but clarified that "she has no plans to convert" and that he respected her decision. Her faith has previously drawn criticism from some within the MAGA movement, where conservatives questioned having a non-Christian, Brown second lady. The debate also followed JD Vance's past remarks describing US as a Christian nation.

Açık Sorular
