Jon Stewart criticized President Donald Trump on The Daily Show, focusing on a joke about a potential body double and Trump's conduct during the World Cup final trophy presentation and post-match remarks. This led to a sharp rebuke from the White House.
Jon Stewart took aim at President Donald Trump on The Daily Show Monday and jokingly suggested that the commander-in-chief might have a body double, or “back-up Trump.”
During a segment on the World Cup final, Stewart rolled footage of the 80-year-old president speaking to reporters in front of Air Force One after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. But it wasn’t Trump’s remarks that caught his attention.
Looming in the background was a man who bore an eerie resemblance to the president: similar build, gait, age and clad, like Trump, in a navy suit.
“What’s up with the guy behind Trump? Can we see that again? Can you bring that out? Who the f*** is this guy?” he said, visibly baffled. “Who in the world is it? Oh my God! Is that a back-up Trump?”
The bit only escalated from there. “Wait, what? Wait, who? What? Is that a back-up Trump or is that Trump?” Stewart continued. “Wait, is the one we’ve been dealing with back-up Trump or is that Trump?!”
The identity of the mystery man is unclear, though he may have been Viktor Knavs, First Lady Melania Trump’s father, who attended the match alongside the president.
The first lady, for her part, is no stranger to such speculation. Since stepping foot in the White House, Melania Trump has been trailed by a bizarre and baseless conspiracy theory alleging that she is occasionally swapped out for a lookalike at public appearances.
Elsewhere in Monday’s segment, Stewart took aim at the Republican president for lingering onstage — appearing to bask in the spotlight — after presenting Spain’s team with the winner’s trophy.
“What the f*** are you doing on the stage?” Stewart said. “It’s for the players…Why must everything be tainted by the overinflated ego of Cankles Muldoon? Why?”
Trump’s refusal to exit during the trophy lift was also noticed by a commentator for Australia’s Special Broadcasting Service, who was caught on a hot mic saying: “They’re going to edit him out of that.”
The Daily Show host also zeroed in on Trump’s post-match remarks to reporters.
“I will admit this: afterwards, Trump had some really insightful post-game analysis,” Stewart said, before airing footage of Trump declaring that the 2026 soccer tournament was “four times greater than any FIFA ever held.”
“What’s a FIFA? How do you hold a FIFA? How could our FIFA be four times greater than any other FIFA?” Stewart questioned. “Is that what they told you? You know they’re telling you that because everyone around you lies to you.”
When reached by The Independent, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle sharply criticized Stewart.
“Jon Stewart is a talentless hack who clearly suffers from a severe and debilitating disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut-sized brain and ruined his life to the point he has to compensate for his embarrassing inadequacies,” Ingle said.
Trump, for his part, has also criticized Stewart. In 2013, he wrote on Twitter, now X: “Little Jon Stewart(?) Is a p****, he would be hopeless in a debate with me!”
