England 'did really well'

Wayne Rooney, former England striker, has praised the way England went about the first half.

"England did really well to get to the hydration break, then after they came out and looked like they had more energy about them," he tells the BBC.

"They first goal then continued with the second but the last five minutes there was a bit nervy — the response from Mexico was brilliant."

His former teammate Joe Hart wishes he was there.

"This is an absolute belter of a game. I wish I was in that stadium," he tells the BBC.

"The energy is through the roof. Just when you thought England had silenced Mexico, for them to come back and score that goal, it was then backs to the wall for the last five minutes.

"But, they dug in, big save from Pickford, good defending from Bellingham. Can't wait for the second half."

"No frustration. A full-throttle match.

"Every minute feels like the 90th minute. Mexico always starts the game fast, and we knew at the water break that 0-0 would be a good result for us, and it was.

My goodness, what a half of football. England were playing with their backs against the wall but scored two stunning goals on the counterattack as Jude Bellingham headed and slid home within 100 seconds of each other.

Then Mexico responded.

A cheap free kick costing England plenty on the right side, as Julián Quiñones smashed home from inside the box.

A brilliant game of football.
