A man accused of making explosives has been refused bail as a major police operation at his Bathurst home in the New South Wales Central West enters its third day.

Paul Stephen Lowry appeared in Parramatta's online bail division court on Thursday, charged with possessing, supplying or making explosives for unlawful purposes and two counts of not keeping a gun safely.

Court documents allege the offences occurred on Wednesday morning in the Bathurst suburb of Perthville.

They show the 46-year-old is unemployed and lives with his father.

Mr Lowry did not apply for bail and it was refused.

Specialist police teams have been searching the Rockley Street house since Wednesday.

Local officers have been supported by forensic specialists, a police rescue team and a Fire and Rescue NSW hazardous materials (hazmat) unit.

Personnel have been seen entering and leaving the house in hazmat suits and masks, while carrying items to be inspected under gazebos set up in front of the property.

A statement from NSW Police confirmed the operation was part of an ongoing investigation, but provided no further details.

Mr Lowry is due to appear in the Bathurst Local Court next week.
