Man fatally stabbed in Hamilton South, Newcastle

Police in Newcastle are searching for the person responsible for the stabbing death of a man at Hamilton South.

Emergency services were called to a unit block on Hassall Street yesterday.

Investigators say there are a number of potential witnesses who were in the area that they want to speak with.

Police have scoured a unit block in suburban Newcastle after a man was fatally stabbed yesterday.

Emergency services, including police and intensive care paramedics, were called to the block on Hassall Street, Hamilton South, about 3:30pm.

Paramedics attempted to treat a man, believed to be aged in his 40s, for stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition, where he later died from his injuries.

Newcastle City Police Superintendent Kylie Endemi said an extensive forensic examination was underway.

Detectives and officers from the state's riot and homicide squads have searched the unit block.

"Those investigators are very much invested in ascertaining what led to the man's death," she said.

"Police are on scene there in Hassel Street today conducting further investigations and speaking to potential witnesses.

"There has been a forensic examination undertaken at the scene and we are doing a canvass at the moment and potentially identifying witnesses to what has occurred and trying to find other information that will assist our investigators, including CCTV footage."

Busy scene

Superintendent Endemi said the area around the Hassall Street block, including surrounding streets, was busy at the time of the stabbing.

"There will be people out there that may have seen things that can assist us with that information, or may have footage including dash cam footage," she said.

"We do anticipate that there will be other people that hold information in relation to what transpired and who committed this crime.

"We would make a plea for them to please contact us."

She said police will deploy significant resourcing to the investigation and to ensure residents feel safe.

"There is no threat remaining to the community, and [we] reassure them that our investment in keeping our community and our streets safe continues," she said.

"We have invested a lot of police resources across our district and particularly in the Hamilton South area.

"High visibility policing operations under the auspice of Operation Confidence and other strategies that we have implemented will absolutely continue.

"We will continue to keep people safe."
