MP govt orders CBI probe into Twisha Sharma's death

The Madhya Pradesh government has notified a CBI probe into the death of Twisha Sharma, officials said on Friday. The decision comes amid allegations and counter claims surrounding the circumstances of her death, prompting demands for a deeper and more comprehensive investigation by a central agency. The notification issued by the Madhya Pradesh Home Department stated that, in view of the proposal to hand over the probe, the state government has granted consent under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, extending the powers and jurisdiction of the Delhi Special Police Establishment (CBI) across Madhya Pradesh for investigation of the case. The order further said that consent has also been accorded for investigation into any related offences, abetment, or conspiracy linked to the matter. The notification was issued in the name of the Governor of Madhya Pradesh and signed by Home Department Secretary Krishnaveni Deshawetu. Former district judge Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, who allegedly died by suicide at her Bhopal residence earlier this month, is now facing the possibility of cancellation of her anticipatory bail as well as a review of her position as president of the Bhopal District Consumer Commission. Police have issued a “third and final notice” to Giribala Singh, directing her to record her statement in connection with the case. Police sources indicated that if she continues to avoid cooperating with the probe, they may approach the court seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to her by a Bhopal sessions court. Meanwhile, the state government has reportedly sought clarification from the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission on whether a person under investigation can continue to head a district consumer panel. The matter has also reached the Madhya Pradesh high court, where multiple petitions related to the alleged dowry death are expected to come up before the vacation bench on Friday. Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, who remains absconding, has approached the Jabalpur bench of the high court seeking anticipatory bail after his earlier plea was rejected by a sessions court. Meanwhile, Twisha’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, has filed a petition seeking cancellation of the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh.
