In Beijing, a red rainstorm alert – the second highest – was issued on Monday for a number of districts, with rain expected to continue over the next three days.
According to the city’s forecaster, the rain will get increasingly stronger with the most concentrated period expected to be from Wednesday morning until that night. Ground transport is likely to be affected.
There is also a risk of torrents in the mountainous Fangshan, Mentougou and Pinggu districts, the forecaster said, while warning the public to halt outdoor activities.
In Tianjin, accumulated rain of up to 20cm (8 inches) is expected in some regions, the northern coastal city’s forecaster said, predicting a high of 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 degrees Fahrenheit) on Monday and Tuesday, dropping to 26 or 28 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, after heavy rainfall.
Shanghai airports cancelled nearly 40 per cent of all flights on Monday as heavy rain continued after Typhoon Dolphin made landfall in eastern China on Sunday evening and continued to move north.
