Russia has increased ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine recently, while Ukraine faces a shortage of Patriot interceptor munitions.

Yazı boyutu

Russia has pounded Ukraine’s capital Kyiv with ballistic missiles, killing at least nine people and wounding 28 others, including four children, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

The strikes hit early on Saturday, triggering more than a dozen explosions that reverberated across the city, witnesses told Reuters.

Fires broke out across Kyiv and power outages were reported in some areas. Klitschko said a residential building in Shevchenkivskyi district was partially destroyed, trapping people inside. The first and second floors of the damaged building had partially collapsed, he said. Some warehouses were also on fire, he said.

This is the second major attack on Kyiv this week. The strikes came two days after a suspected Russian cruise missile landed in Poland during a large attack on Ukraine. That attack on Thursday killed nine people, including six members of one family in a village near Kryvyi Rih.

Russia has stepped up its attacks using ballistic missiles on Ukraine in recent months, while Kyiv is currently short of Patriot interceptor munitions, which are crucial to defend against them. In retaliation, Ukraine is intensifying its attacks on Russian territory, mainly targeting oil depots.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pressed allies for more support, and has been negotiating with the United States for a licence to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump said that talks were ongoing, but that Washington had not yet agreed to the proposal, and had to be “very careful about letting somebody build them”, despite initially saying earlier this month that he had agreed to give the Ukrainians a licence.

“You have to be very judicious, but you have to be very careful,” Trump said on Friday. “Now we have not agreed to that. We’re talking about it, but it’s a hard thing to give away that kind of technology. And I don’t think this would ever happen, but, you know, there’s people that you give that technology, they can someday turn on you.”
