問題は2024年10月に発覚。上司が書類不備に気づいたことをきっかけに、科捜研元主査の冨永剛弘被告（43）が実際には実施していない鑑定をしたかのように装ったり、ガーゼ片などの鑑定資料を紛失し、別のものを鑑定依頼元に返還したりしていたことが判明した。
県警は調査で、不正な鑑定は17～24年に130件あったと認定。冨永被告を虚偽有印公文書作成容疑などで書類送検し、25年9月に懲戒免職処分にした。また佐賀地検が2月に虚偽有印公文書作成・同行使、証拠隠滅の罪で在宅起訴している。
福田本部長は問題発覚後の定例会見で「二度と生じさせないよう、再発防止策を徹底していく」などと謝罪していた。
問題発覚を受け、警察庁は昨年10月から特別監察を実施。35人態勢で、警察庁の付属機関「科学警察研究所」のDNA型鑑定担当のトップら専門家が加わり、被告が単独で実施したDNA型鑑定632件などについて調べた。
この日の報告書によると、25年9月に発表した県警の調査では130件だった不適切なDNA型鑑定は、新たに110件が認定され、130件のうちの1件が除かれた分と合わせて239件に増えた。鑑定の4割弱が不正だったことになる。
