SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- A new 3,600-ton frigate was delivered to the Navy following a series of successful sea trials, the defense procurement agency said Friday, as the armed service seeks to replace its aging warships.
The ROKS Gyeongbuk frigate was delivered to the Navy during a ceremony held at a SK Oceanplant shipyard in Goseong, about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said in a release.
The 129-meter-long Ulsan-class frigate is armed with 5-inch naval guns, tactical ship-to-land and anti-ship missiles, and long-range anti-submarine torpedoes. It is equipped with a multi-function radar capable of detecting and tracking aerial and ship targets.
The warship, tasked with monitoring and defending operational areas, is expected to serve as a core fleet asset, the Navy said.
Launched in June 2025, it is the second vessel of the Ulsan-class Batch-III frigate program designed to replace aging naval frigates.
The frigate will undergo about six months of training period before going into operational service at a regional fleet.
