Spain Celebrates World Cup Victory in Madrid

Spain's World Cup champions are celebrating back home, parading through the streets of Madrid after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Argentina.

For fans lining the streets of Madrid today, this celebration was worth the wait. For Merce Moron, today's celebration also brings back a very different memory. In 1986, during the World Cup in Mexico, Spain faced Belgium in the quarterfinals and missed a penalty kick. Moron recalls standing on her balcony with her brother and crying. She later told her father, "I will never see Spain win a World Cup 'cause Spain is never going to win a World Cup." Moron's sentiment reflected that of many Spaniards who, for generations, experienced repeated heartbreaks. Despite the world's biggest stars playing in Spain for clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid, and spectacular football, the national team consistently fell short.

However, things eventually changed. Spain's "golden generation" achieved significant success, winning back-to-back Euros and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The recent victory against Argentina was hard-won, with Argentina's goalie, Emiliano Dibu Martinez, making a record 11 saves, causing frustration among Spanish fans until the game concluded.

Merce Moron watched the game with her family and was emotional afterward, stating, "I never imagined I could live to witness two World Cups, two finals, two wins. I have goose bumps. I've cried so much."

Ruben Jimenez, who works at a bank, expressed his joy, saying, "How wonderful it is to wake up a world champion." Jimenez particularly admired the Spanish team's collective strength rather than reliance on individual players.
