TAIPEI TIMES Taiwan to tighten review of forced labor-linked imports

By Chen Cheng-yu 05:00 AM, 06/05/2026

Taiwan is set to enhance its review process for imports suspected of being linked to forced labor, aiming to align with international standards and protect human rights.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) are collaborating on the initiative, which involves strengthening the Customs Administration’s capacity to identify and block goods produced through forced labor.

"We are committed to ensuring that goods entering Taiwan are not produced under exploitative conditions," said Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Chiu Chen-jung at a press conference yesterday.

He explained that the enhanced review process would involve more rigorous documentation checks and potentially on-site investigations for high-risk imports. The government also plans to increase cooperation with international organizations, including the International Labour Organization (ILO), to gather intelligence and best practices.

"This is not just about compliance; it's about our values," Chiu stated. "Taiwan stands for fairness and human dignity, and we will not be a market for goods tainted by forced labor."

The move comes amid growing global pressure on governments to address forced labor in supply chains. Several countries have already implemented similar measures, including import bans and stricter due diligence requirements.

While the specific details of the new regulations are still being finalized, sources indicate that companies found to be importing goods linked to forced labor could face significant penalties, including fines and seizure of goods.

The MOEA and MOF are expected to release a joint statement outlining the new procedures and timelines within the next quarter.

Businesses operating in Taiwan are advised to review their supply chains and ensure compliance with emerging regulations to avoid potential disruptions.
