The Trinamool Congress is facing an internal revolt, prompting Mamata Banerjee's faction to submit a new list of office bearers to the Election Commission, solidifying her leadership. A breakaway group, claiming significant support, has declared its own parallel committee, citing the expiry of the previous one. Loyalists have vehemently dismissed the rebels' actions as having no legal standing within the party's framework.
Amid the severe internal crisis triggered by a widespread rebellion of lawmakers, the Trinamool Congress has formally moved the Election Commission, submitting a fresh roster of office bearers and national working committee members.
PTI sources confirmed that the comprehensive list submitted to the EC explicitly documents the party’s organisational structure "as of June 20, 2026." The move aims to legally solidify the official hierarchy against competing claims from a powerful dissident faction.
According to the official submission, Mamata Banerjee remains the undisputed Chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress.
Subrata Bakshi continues as Vice-President, and Abhishek Banerjee is designated as the National General Secretary, with a parenthetical recognition as the party's Lok Sabha leader.
Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen have been named joint secretaries, while Subhasish Chakraborty retains his post as party treasurer.
Full Working Committee declared
Unlike heavily summarized accounts of the submission, the official document places on record a vast council of loyalist leaders. The newly submitted National Working Committee includes:
Core Executives: Mamata Banerjee, Subrata Bakshi, Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O'Brien, Dola Sen, and Subhasish Chakraborty.
Key Regional Leaders: Chandrima Bhattacharya (explicitly designated as the West Bengal TMC President) and Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay (explicitly designated as the Leader of the West Bengal Assembly).
Senior Committee Members: Amit Mitra, Rajesh Pati Tripathi, Asima Patra, Moloy Ghatak, Gautam Deb, Bulu Chik Baraik, Mukul Sangma, Baiswanor Chattopadhyay, Birbaha Hansda, Kalyan Banerjee, Saugata Roy, Nadimul Haque, Madan Mitra, Biman Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, and Kunal Ghosh.
Rebel faction challenges high command
The high-stakes institutional filing comes immediately after a breakaway faction held a parallel special session in Kolkata, directly challenging the authority of the party’s top brass.
The dissident camp, led by Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, announced its own alternative organizational framework, electing veteran MLA Arup Roy as the "parallel" party chairperson. The rebels, who claim the backing of approximately 20 Lok Sabha MPs and a significant contingent of state MLAs, argue that the official leadership has lost its legal mandate.
"The tenure of the last official national working committee, which was formed in February 2022, has completely expired," the rebel camp stated, describing the current power structure at the party's Kalighat headquarters as a "constitutional crisis."
The faction asserted that their parallel session complied strictly with the TMC constitution and confirmed that they are submitting their own committee transcripts to the Election Commission for independent verification.
Loyalist camp dismisses Rrvolt
The Mamata Banerjee camp has completely rejected the legality of the dissidents' actions. Senior leader and working committee member Kunal Ghosh strongly dismissed the rebellion, stating that the breakaway faction has zero legal standing.
"The dissidents have absolutely no authority under the party framework to convene special sessions, nor do they possess the constitutional power to alter the established organizational structure of the Trinamool Congress," Ghosh said.
