US announces ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon
The US State Department announced on the 3rd that the governments of Israel and Lebanon have agreed to implement a ceasefire.
Amid escalating clashes between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite organization Hezbollah, negotiations between the US and Iran for a cessation of hostilities have stalled. The focus is now on whether Israel's adherence to the ceasefire will lead to a breakthrough.
According to a joint statement, conditions for implementing the ceasefire include the cessation of attacks by Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran. Hezbollah's movements also appear to influence the future of the ceasefire.
High-level officials from the US, Israel, and Lebanon held a meeting at the State Department on the 2nd and 3rd to discuss de-escalation of the situation in Lebanon.
A ceasefire in Lebanon was realized in April following the start of negotiations between the US and Iran. Although extensions have been repeatedly made, Israel has expanded its attacks on Hezbollah, becoming an obstacle to the US-Iran negotiations.
