Varta AG, the parent company of the well-known Varta household battery brand, has filed for insolvency under self-administration with the Stuttgart Local Court. Chief Executive Michael Ostermann stated, "VARTA AG has faced significant challenges in recent quarters. We on the Executive Board and in management are fully aware of our overall responsibility to employees, customers, suppliers, and investors, and are working with all our strength to preserve as many jobs as possible, ensure the company's continued sustainability, and create the best possible prospects for all stakeholders."
Varta AG is privately held following its delisting from the Frankfurt and Vienna stock exchanges in March 2025 as part of a restructuring plan, which was declared complete in April 2025. Reuters also reports that the company’s shareholders, including Porsche AG and Austrian investor Michael Tojner, declined to provide additional funding.
The insolvency proceedings do not affect Varta Consumer Batteries, the profitable household battery division, which is legally separate. However, the subsidiaries Varta Microbattery, Varta Micro Production, and Varta Storage are included in separate applications. CEO Ostermann emphasized that the energy storage market remains a future-oriented industry for the company.
The Stuttgart Local Court has appointed Tobias Wahl, a lawyer from the restructuring firm Anchor, as the provisional supervisor. Under self-administration, Varta’s management retains control while Wahl oversees the proceedings on behalf of creditors. Production will continue, and employees will receive their wages and salaries as usual.
