Venezuela Earthquakes: Death Toll Rises to 1,430 as Search for Survivors Intensifies

Two consecutive earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes struck northern Venezuela, reducing parts to rubble and resulting in a death toll of 1,430 as of Saturday. Thousands remain missing, with residents taking search efforts into their own hands due to a perceived scarcity of government rescuers. The "golden window" for survival (48-72 hours) is narrowing, though this can extend if survivors have access to food and water.

According to the Venezuelan government, 172 people are trapped, 3,238 injured, and 3,100 left homeless. Electricity has been restored in 60% of affected areas, with telecommunications aiding in reunifying families. The UN estimates up to 6.76 million people could be affected based on population and damage analysis. Predictive modelling suggests the death toll will rise into the thousands.

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez announced a full government response, deploying 14,000 military and police. Seventeen flights with over 1,600 rescue team members have arrived from various countries, including the US, Mexico, and the UK. The US is deploying two warships, transport planes, helicopters, and $150 million in aid. The UK has sent £2 million in aid and a 68-member search-and-rescue team.

Residents like Nazareth Jimenez, searching for loved ones in rubble, plead for more resources, especially machinery to move collapsed structures. Lawyer Ricardo Trias criticizes the official response, seeking a death certificate for his godson found in rubble.

The IFRC has launched a 50 million Swiss franc appeal for operations in Venezuela, with the first 17 metric tonnes of aid dispatched from Panama.
