SEOUL -- President Lee Jae Myung instructed the government Thursday to mobilize all of its resources to minimize damage from a record-breaking heat wave gripping the nation.

Lee issued the order at a meeting with relevant ministers and heads of local governments as temperatures climbed to near 40 C in many parts of the country, with the southeastern city of Yangsan posting the highest recorded temperature of 42.5 C on Sunday.

■ S. Korea stages defense drills near Dokdo for 1st time this year

SEOUL -- The South Korean Navy on Thursday conducted defense drills near the country's easternmost islets of Dokdo, marking the first such exercise this year, the armed service said.

"Our military has conducted East Sea defense drills on a regular basis each year," the Navy said, adding the exercise was aimed at responding to threats against the country's territory, people and property.

■ (LEAD) Seoul shares tumble over 4 pct on tech losses amid lingering AI concerns

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks tumbled more than 4 percent Thursday due to losses in tech shares amid lingering concerns over profitability of artificial intelligence (AI) spending. The local currency rose against the U.S. dollar.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 4.58 percent, or 301.88 points, to close at 6,296.38, after falling as low as 6,238.32.

■ 63 N. Korean defectors arrive in S. Korea in 1st half, down 35 pct on-year

SEOUL -- A total of 63 North Korean defectors entered South Korea for resettlement in the first half of the year, down nearly 35 percent from a year earlier, the unification ministry said Thursday.

The tally -- 59 women and four men -- brought the cumulative number of North Korean defectors in the South to 34,600, compared with 96 during the same period last year, according to the ministry.

SEOUL -- South Korea's first lunar orbiter, Danuri, successfully filmed the moment when debris of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket slammed into the moon early this week, the country's space agency said Thursday.

The upper portion of the rocket collided with the lunar surface near the Einstein Crater at 3:34 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Korea Aerospace Agency (KASA).
