Why Stockport’s Dave Challinor stands out as the master of a promotion push

Manager has finished in a playoff spot or higher every year bar one in his 16 seasons with four clubs and is preparing for Stevenage test“I’ve been through absolutely everything,” says Dave Challinor. “I’ve won and lost eliminators, won and lost semi-finals and finals, won and lost on penalties. I’ve even had goalkeepers score against me.”When it comes to the playoffs and promotion, few can match Challinor in terms of experience. For 15 of his 16 seasons as a manager his teams – Colwyn Bay, Fylde, Hartlepool and more recently Stockport – have finished in a playoff spot or higher. The exception came in 2019-20 when he moved mid-campaign. When Stockport begin their League One playoff campaign with a semi-final first leg away at Stevenage on Saturday, it will be Challinor’s 12th playoff experience, at every level from the Northern Premier League to League One. Oxford United relegated to League One after Charlton win confirms drop

Oxford United have been relegated to League One after Charlton Athletic's 2-1 win against Hull City mathematically confirmed their drop. Matt Bloomfield's side needed to win their two remaining matches and hope Charlton lost both while reducing goal difference, but Nathan Jones' Addicks moved out of reach. The relegation ends Oxford's two-year spell in the Championship after winning promotion via the League One play-offs in 2024. Oxford struggled from the start, losing their first three league games and being two points adrift at Christmas, leading to Gary Rowett replacing Des Buckingham in December 2024, before Bloomfield took over in January.

Leicester City: From 5,000/1 Premier League Champions to League One Relegation

Leicester City have been relegated to League One after a 2-2 draw with Hull City confirmed their place in the third tier for only the second time in the club's 142-year history. Just under a decade after their miraculous 2015/16 Premier League title at 5,000/1 odds, the Foxes have suffered back-to-back relegations, compounded by a six-point deduction for financial breaches and £71.1m losses. The club also faced the tragic death of owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a 2018 helicopter crash.

Leicester City have been relegated to League One after a 2-2 draw with Hull City at the King Power Stadium confirmed their place in the third tier for only the second time in the club's 142-year history. The Foxes, who famously won the Premier League in 2016 against 5000/1 odds, have suffered back-to-back relegations and now face a sharp decline from their position as Champions League quarter-finalists and 2021 FA Cup winners. The club also reported a pre-tax loss of £71.1m for the 2024/25 season and was deducted six points earlier this year for breaching financial rules.

Leicester relegated to League One, 10 years on from Premier League triumph

Ten years after a legendary, against-the-odds Premier League triumph, five years since winning the FA Cup, and a single season after dropping out of the top flight, Leicester City have been relegated to the third tier of English football. For a club that experienced real tragedy not long ago it would be misguided to indulge in hyperbole, but a second straight relegation is a sporting disaster, certainly one of the most spectacular falls in the recent history of the domestic game. Brighton v Chelsea: Premier League – live

⚽ Premier League updates from the 8pm BST kick-off⚽ Today’s Football Daily | Follow on Bluesky | Mail SimonHello world! Six defeats in seven games in all competitions, with the one non-defeat an FA Cup win over Port Vale who play in League One and thus doesn’t count, mean Chelsea have all but kissed goodbye to their chances of a place in the top five. Brighton meanwhile have won five of their last seven, all of them in the Premier League. On Valentine’s Day Chelsea were fifth and Brighton 13 points back in 14th; if they win tonight Brighton will go above them. “My job is to be accountable. The buck stops with me,” says the beleaguered Liam Rosenior, whose summer holiday looks increasingly likely to be indefinite in length. So, and to summarise, actually quite a lot riding on this. Chelsea are under growing pressure as four consecutive league defeats have left them seven points off fifth-placed Liverpool with five games to play, and Rosenior was realistic when asked whether his bosses had assured him his future did not hinge on securing Champions League qualification.
