South Korea has finalized a plan to acquire U.S. Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) shipborne missile interceptors by 2034, costing 530 billion won, to bolster its Aegis destroyers' defense capabilities against various threats.

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration has approved the purchase of US-made SM-6 long-range surface-to-air missiles for its Aegis destroyers. The plan aims to enhance fleet defense capabilities and missile defense against North Korea.

A CSIS report published Tuesday reveals significant depletion of US naval and precision strike munitions, including SM-3 and SM-6 interceptors, Precision Strike Missiles for Himars launchers, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and JASSM stealth missiles. The think tank warns that insufficient pre-war inventories would constrain US forces in a potential conflict with a peer competitor like China, where munitions consumption would be unprecedented.
