As of Tuesday, 23 Indian states and Union Territories have finished the houselisting operations (HLO) for Census 2027. Eight more are in progress, with Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, and Nagaland recently starting or opening self-enumeration windows. The process uses digital tools alongside traditional door-to-door visits.
Census 2027's houselisting phase is active in 5 states and UTs, with enumeration ongoing in 11 more. A self-enumeration portal is available in Ladakh and other regions, allowing digital participation. This exercise is crucial for national development and resource planning.
Telangana has become the first state in India to begin self-enumeration for Census 2027, marking the country's inaugural fully digital census. Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, and Union Minister G Kishan Reddy completed the online process and urged citizens to participate. The self-enumeration phase runs from April 26 to May 10, 2026, followed by house-listing operations from May 11 to June 9, 2026.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his monthly Mann ki Baat address appealed to citizens to participate in Census 2027, assuring that all digital information shared is secure and protected. He highlighted the new self-enumeration option that allows people to enter their information digitally 15 days before an enumerator visits. Modi also celebrated India's achievements in nuclear energy, noting the Fast Breeder Reactor in Kalpakkam achieving criticality, and praised progress in solar and wind energy sectors.
More than 2.6 million households have utilized the self-enumeration portal for India's Census 2027. The ongoing house listing and housing census, which began on April 16, marks the country's first fully digital census operation.
