
RhD Cases Double in Remote Community Despite Health System Reforms
In the remote Gulf community of Doomadgee, Australia, cases of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) and its precursor, Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF), have nearly doubled since 2020. Despite a coronial inquest's recommendations and implemented reforms focusing on hygiene and access to care, the number of patients requiring monthly penicillin injections has risen significantly, prompting concerns about systemic failures and the root causes of the preventable disease.
