New study finds Arctic permafrost carbon largely sequestered in seafloor
A study by the Alfred Wegener Institute and MARUM reveals that most ancient carbon released from thawing Arctic permafrost is buried in seafloor sediments rather than converted into greenhouse gases, as microorganisms preferentially consume fresher marine organic matter.
