British Tourist Killed in Regional Australia; Perpetrator Found Not Criminally Responsible Due to Mental Impairment
A 29-year-old man with schizophrenia has been found not criminally responsible for the murder of British tourist Royce Mallett, 30, who was stabbed to death in the car park of a motel in Albury, NSW, on 8 July 2024. David Summers-Smith, who was experiencing psychosis and had been self-medicating with ice and cannabis, pleaded not guilty due to mental impairment. Supreme Court Justice Dina Yehia ordered Summers-Smith to be held indefinitely in a mental health facility after finding he committed the murder but could not be held criminally responsible.
