That's it from the blog tonight

D

By Dean Bilton

How about that for the Baggers. Back on the winners list and feeling a little better after what has been a season from hell so far.

Demons fans will be feeling even better after their win over Hawthorn today. The Dees proved yet again this year they are a proper team and a challenger at the top end of the ladder.

And then there was Adelaide, who went absolutely nuts in the second quarter to totally blow North out of the water.

That's it for us. We'll be back tomorrow for the last three games of round 10. Hope you can join us then.

Match report: Carlton 10.14 (74) def Western Bulldogs 9.8 (62)

D

By Dean Bilton

Carlton have produced a stunning final quarter to end a seven-game losing streak, upsetting the Western Bulldogs by 12 points in their first match after Michael Voss' exit as coach.

Under interim coach Josh Fraser, the Blues booted five unanswered goals in the final term to secure a memorable 10.14 (74) to 9.8 (62) victory at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.

Trailing by eight points at three-quarter time, Carlton delivered an irresistible last 30 minutes as the Bulldogs had just one shot on goal until putting through two majors when the result was already secure.

The Blues' second victory of the season comes just four days after Voss quit the club midway through his fifth year in charge.

Carlton had blown six leads this year, but the Blues finally put together a strong finish to the game to restore some pride for the club's supporter base.

Captain Patrick Cripps, who has been subject to speculation over his future at the club beyond this year, put in a masterful last quarter to inspire the Blues.

Kicking two of Carlton's five goals across the first three quarters, the dual Brownlow Medallist threw himself into everything in the final term with 13 disposals to finish with 29 for the game.

Unlikely hero Matt Carroll had a career-best outing, booting three goals, two of them from outside 50.

Key forward Harry McKay kicked two important goals, backing up his strong performance in a loss against Brisbane last week.

Carlton debutant Jack Ison made an impact before the match even started, taking part in a pre-game ceremony for Sir Doug Nicholls Round with Blues teammate Zac Williams and Bulldogs forward Arty Jones.

Ison finished with 15 possessions and the sealing goal in the final term in an inspiring first-up performance for the 19-year-old.

Patrick Cripps reflects on a difficult week and a brilliant win

There were a few moments tonight which Patrick Cripps claimed as his own. He was not about to let his side be beaten in this game.

Match report: Melbourne 18.12 (120) def Hawthorn 12.9 (81)

D

By Dean Bilton

Melbourne have continued their stunning rise under first-year coach Steven King with a run-away 39-point win over Hawthorn.

The Demons' offensive firepower was on full show as they turned a six-point half-time margin into an 18.12 (120) to 12.9 (81) triumph in front of 68,557 fans at the MCG on Saturday.

It improves Melbourne's record to 7-3 as they leapfrog the Hawks (6-3-1) into fifth spot on the ladder.

The Demons, whose lead reached 51 points in the final quarter, are unbeaten in six appearances at the MCG this season and have kicked triple-figure scores seven times in 10 rounds.

Jack Steele (26 disposals, six clearances) and Tom Sparrow (27 disposals, eight clearances) were key ball-winners, Harvey Langford (18 touches, two goals) shone on a wing, and Harrison Petty kicked three goals.

Max Gawn (18 touches, eight clearances) was influential in the ruck and Daniel Turner stood tall in defence.

Kysaiah Pickett was blunted by Finn Maginness for periods, but still had a say in the outcome with 13 disposals and two goals.

Hawthorn, who missed injured spearhead Jack Gunston and key defender Tom Barrass, have lost two and drawn one of their past three games.

Dylan Moore was the Hawks' best with 27 disposals and two goals, while Karl Amon (28 touches) and Jai Newcombe (24) had plenty of the ball.

Nick Watson kicked three goals from nine touches, but was limited by Koltyn Tholstrup.

FT: Blues break through to beat Bulldogs by 12

D

By Dean Bilton

It felt all night like this game would reach a point where want would be the deciding factor. It's an old cliche, but this wasn't a good enough game to be decided by class or quality or tactics. It was going to be desperation and desire.

And for that reason, it always felt like the Blues would find a way to come out on top. For the interim coach Josh Fraser and the former coach Michael Voss. The Bulldogs needed to win this for their ladder position, but the Blues needed to win it for their soul.

It was a tough watch at times, but the joy was created by guys like Matt Carroll and Jack Ison, unheralded Carlton young guns who can ignite the new era.

Tough one for the Bulldogs, who are playing injured but were really poor tonight. Too much left to too few, and they hardly fired a shot in the second half.

The Blues will celebrate this fully and why not? A long time in between wins, and after the challenges the club has faced it is overdue a happy night.

Rhylee West and Aaron Naughton with consolation goals for the Dogs

D

By Dean Bilton

The Bulldogs have kicked four goals in the second half, including those two in the final minute with the game gone. It's been horribly disappointing from their point of view.

West's snap was tidy, and then Naughton won a free kick in front of goal for his.

Jack Ison ices it on debut! The Blues are surely home!

D

By Dean Bilton

They have totally owned this final quarter, and with that joyous goal from a young man playing his first AFL game, the Carlton fans are ready to celebrate.

Ison has been really bright tonight, from the pre-match ceremony all the way to that goal. His teammates come from everywhere on what is turning into a feel-good night for Carlton.

Ben Ainsworth! Blues by 17!

D

By Dean Bilton

With seven minutes to play, and given how poor and meek the Bulldogs have been in this last quarter, the Blues may well be home.

When the ball hit the deck inside 50 there were Blues everywhere, defenders nowhere to be seen. Ainsworth had so much time to settle and snap and put Carlton on the edge.

Brodie Kemp gets a toe to it! Blues out by 10!

D

By Dean Bilton

Messy footy from both sides until the ball sat up between Kemp and Busslinger. Busslinger hesitated as Kemp threw a boot at it out of mid-air.

The ball trickles home and the Blues fans are up and about in the stands. They can taste it now.

Harry McKay puts the Blues in front!

D

By Dean Bilton

Cripps straight out of the middle, long ball to the contests where Busslinger was holding McKay. The free kick is paid and the goal is kicked.

At last the Blues manage to hit the front. They can taste it now.

Matt Carroll wins the 50 and kicks his third for the Blues

D

By Dean Bilton

Ridiculous from Sam Davidson, who was clearly trying to slow Carroll up after the mark at half-forward but just made it far too obvious. Easy 50m penalty to pay.

That's three for Carroll and we've got a two-point game. Blues with some momentum.

3QT: Bulldogs lead Blues by eight in a close one

D

By Dean Bilton

We are where we have been for pretty much this whole night. It's close. It's tough. It's untidy. And it's the Bulldogs who lead by around about a kick.

Without wanting to be too harsh, this hasn't been much of a game. But at least it is close, and that means we remain a chance of getting a good finish.

Desperation will kick in at some point in this last term and then we will start to see something. A morale-booster is there for the taking for the Blues, while a loss would be unthinkable for the Dogs.

Cooper Hynes converts for the Dogs

D

By Dean Bilton

Clever kick inboard by Naughton that time on his non-preferred right boot. He squeezed a pass to Hynes who nailed a simple set shot.

The Dogs are keeping them at arm's length.

Patrick Cripps with a captain's goal!

D

By Dean Bilton

From the stoppage, Cripps clears a path and bursts through it! Nobody can tackle him at full speed, and the rushed snap dribbles on through.

We're asking for someone to grab hold of this game. Perhaps Patrick Cripps is the man.

Aaron Naughton breaks the Bulldogs' drought

D

By Dean Bilton

Been a long time coming, but at last the Bulldogs have a goal. Billy Wilson took his eyes off the ball in the marking contest and blocked Naughton's run, coughing up a soft free kick.

Really does feel like this game is right there to be seized by someone, and nobody has been willing or able to do it. Dogs lead by 10 points.

Matt Carroll kicks a brilliant Carlton goal

D

By Dean Bilton

Again we are made to wait a while for a goal, but again it's a beauty from Matt Carroll. He does his best work from the arc it seems, this one another long bomb from the paint on that left foot.

It's a four-point game, and the Blues are looking the most likely at the moment.

Back at it for the second half

D

By Dean Bilton

Wonder what Josh Fraser's first half-time speech sounded like? Blues have a chance to do something great for their interim coach in this second half.

Ball is in the air and we're back at it again.

HT: Bulldogs lead Blues by 10 in low-scoring game

D

By Dean Bilton

Still not a classic. The Blues are not lacking in effort and physicality at least, but haven't yet had the class to make the Bulldogs pay on the scoreboard.

The Dogs are humming along, not playing particularly well but deserving of the lead. Feels like it might break open at some point in the second half and at that point it will be anyone's game.

Better to come, we hope.

  • Can Melbourne sustain their challenge at the top of the ladder?
