HT: Collingwood 6.9 (45) lead West Coast 5.5 (35)
D By Dean Bilton
The Magpies had built up a head of steam late in that second quarter but the Eagles held on without the lead getting away from them. Which would have been harsh, because the Eagles have been every bit in this game.
The difference in the game is the efficiency inside 50, turning entires into scores. Collingwood are going at 64%, which is very high. West Coast are going at 32%, which is very low.
Every else, the Eagles are doing just fine. Can they keep up this effort, given how much this all means to the Magpies? Scott Pendlebury has been pretty quiet aside from a little get and give with Harley Reid early, but Nick Daicos has been very busy.
Interesting second half awaits.
Ed Allan ignites the MCG! Pies have another!
D By Dean Bilton
Some fatigue and panic in the Eagles backline there because they had a few chances to get out of that jam, but they just couldn't stop the Pies from coming.
Ed Allan's snap there from all of 45 was a ripper. Pies sense there is a moment here late in the half to get a run on.
Jamie Elliott out the back and on the board for the Pies
D By Dean Bilton
So poor again from the West Coast defence, who are just leaking scores despite all the good work being done ahead of them. Young left Elliott to fly for a spoil in the contest and missed the ball completely.
Elliott had a free run to stroll the ball in to goal and put his side back in front.
Jake Waterman is on the board and the Eagles are back in front
D By Dean Bilton
He had to appeal to the umpire for that free kick, but his case was convincing enough. Just a tiny hold from Maynard, and he certainly didn't agree with the call.
Waterman nails the set shot, which has been an issue for him this year. Eagles keep on coming.
Nick Daicos finally finds his goal!
D By Dean Bilton
If at first you don't succeed, keep on having those pot shots at goal. Daicos slipped away from Duursma by a couple of metres and that's all it took for Nick.
Beautiful snap straight from the stoppage. Pies back in front.
Harvey Johnston puts the Eagles back in front
D By Dean Bilton
Finally some class inside 50 from the Eagles. Tom Cole was the one who had the ball tight in the pocket, and managed to pick out a beautiful squaring pass to the chest of Johnston.
Eagles back in front.
HT: Heeney slows Cats' momentum with another goal after the siren
J By Jon Healy
The Swans trail by 20 — 8.10 (58) to 6.2 (38) — at the long break as Isaac Heeney slots a goal right after the half-time siren.
Chris Scott would have been feeling almost sanguine with 20 seconds remaining and the ball deep in Sydney's third of the park, but Ollie Dempsey was pinged for running past the mark and Angus Sheldrick gleefully accepted the free 50 metres.
He launched it forward and Heeney arrived late to clunk one.
Another intercept mark leads directly to a Geelong goal
J By Jon Healy
The Swans are battling to get it out of their defensive half and this time Callum Mills bombs out from just in front of the goalsquare. There are two Cats and two Swans in the contest, but the Cats are, ironically, the only ones who fly and Zach Guthrie comes away with it.
He streams inside 50m, finds Shaun Mannagh, who has a wealth of options but pulls the right rein and curls in Geelong's eighth goal.
Lachie Schutlz crumbs to put the Pies in front
D By Dean Bilton
The Eagles read that squaring kick from Steele, but Duggan dropped the mark and opened the door for the Pies.
It fell into Schultz's lap, and that is just too easy. The West Coast defence too easy to score against.
Up and down for Jai Serong
J By Jon Healy
Young gun Jai Serong wins a one-on-one against Patrick Dangerfield with a classy mark.
But as he launches out of the back pocket, there's a hold off the ball by one of his teammates and the ball comes right back to that contest.
Danger's done all his calculations and this time wins the match-up but his snap from the tight angle is too acute and it's only a point.
A nasty hobble for Malcolm Rosas
J By Jon Healy
The Swans forward rolls his left ankle badly and he runs away from the trainer.
He's going to try to run it off, but that one really hurt.
Eventually the physio finds him and all but drags him off the field.
Geelong on a roll now
J By Jon Healy
Tom McCartin comes up with a superb tackle on a flying Oisin Mullin to save a certain goal, leaving the Irishman with a heavy limp.
But the ball-up is a contest in name only, as Shannon Neale taps over his head to Tom Atkins, who nabs with one hand and snaps home.
Did any Swan even nominate for that ruck? McCartin and Caiden Cleary were both in the vicinity, but no-one got in the mix.
A gift for Brad Close
J By Jon Healy
A pack waits for Zach Guthrie's long ball and Jack Martin flies through the air, seemingly leaving every other player in a state of frozen perplexity as he comes up with nothing but air.
The ball spews out the back, Brad Close mops up, says thank you very much, turns and drills it home from the pocket.
Classy stuff and suddenly Geelong leads by 12.
The Cats are back (to back)
J By Jon Healy
After that run of misses, the Cats are attacking with their defence.
This time Ollie Dempsey steals Justin McInerney's pass and taps to Shaun Mannagh, who finds Jeremy Cameron all alone in the forward 50m.
Too easy.
QT: West Coast 3.2 (20) lead Collingwood 2.6 (18)
D By Dean Bilton
The Eagles had 19 inside 50s in that first quarter. Those are massive numbers, and speak to how strongly they are competing in the contest and in ground level. But as a developing side, they still lack that real precision and efficiency going forward.
Collingwood on the other hand managed 11 inside 50s but scored from eight of them. And if that level of efficiency is maintained through the game, they'll probably be fine.
Eagles standing up to the moment though! For now anyway.
Bailey Williams puts the Eagles back in front
D By Dean Bilton
A man in career-best form, Williams took two big contested grabs inside 50 in a couple of minutes there. He missed the first shot, but drilled the second.
Eagles are about to win a first quarter for the first time all season.
Lawson Humphries from 65 metres!
J By Jon Healy
Tom McCartin kicks a floater into the middle of the centre square and Lawson Humphries breaks and times his run perfectly to steal a lovely intercept mark.
He looks up and sees no-one and nothing inside 50m, so he just launches and rolls it home.
Two more go begging for Geelong
J By Jon Healy
Jeremy Cameron is centimetre perfect to find Shaun Mannagh in the pocket, but his snap is across the face.
Cameron tries again after intercepting Will Edwards's kick to the wing as he goes back with the flight and finding Jack Martin. He launches his shot into the stratosphere and it's cuuuuuuurving … but not enough.
Kicking 3.8 now, the Cats.
