Andy Farrell extends Ireland contract until 2031

Andy Farrell has signed a new contract to remain as Ireland head coach until 2031, ending speculation that he could return to England after the next Rugby World Cup.

The extension means Farrell will lead Ireland through two more World Cup cycles. He has been in charge since replacing Joe Schmidt in late 2019 and has overseen two Six Nations titles, including a Grand Slam in 2023, as well as a historic Test series win over the All Blacks in New Zealand.

IRFU chief executive Kevin Potts described the deal as “a hugely positive step for Irish rugby” and said Farrell is “a truly world-class coach and an exceptional leader”. Potts said Farrell’s influence extends beyond results, pointing to the culture and pride he has helped build across the game in Ireland.

Farrell said he is “incredibly proud” to continue the journey and highlighted the talent coming through the system across the provinces and age-grade programmes. He added that he believes “the best is yet to come” with sustained effort.

The decision closes off a possible route back to English rugby for Farrell, who had been discussed as an option for the Rugby Football Union if Steve Borthwick’s tenure is not extended beyond next year. Elsewhere, England are waiting to learn whether Manny Feyi-Waboso will be fit for their summer tour games after surgery on his jaw. The Exeter winger, who was also absent for the Six Nations with a hamstring injury, could still be available for the opening Test of the Nations Championship against South Africa in Johannesburg on 4 July.
