Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s Rare "Obstructing the Field" Dismissal Sparks Controversy in IPL 2026

A controversial moment took centre stage in IPL 2026 as Kolkata Knight Riders' young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi was dismissed in rare fashion during their crucial clash against Lucknow Super Giants. The unusual "obstructing the field" decision has since become one of the most talked-about incidents of the season, adding to KKR's growing struggles in the tournament.

Coming in at a difficult stage of the innings, Raghuvanshi was attempting to stabilise KKR's batting after an early collapse. However, his effort was cut short in dramatic fashion when he was adjudged out for obstructing the field, one of the rarest dismissals in cricket.

The incident unfolded during a delivery from Prince Yadav. Raghuvanshi gently nudged the ball towards mid-on and called for a quick single. Midway through the run, he was sent back, forcing him to dive to make his ground as a sharp throw came in. As the ball struck him during the attempt, Lucknow players, including Mohammed Shami, immediately appealed.

The third umpire Rohit Pandit accepted Shami and LSG's appeal for Raghuvanshi obstructing the field and declared the KKR batter out, which left the visitors reeling at 27 for three after five overs. KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar was seen arguing with the fourth umpire near the team dugout as Raghuvanshi threw his helmet in frustration.

The "obstructing the field" rule comes into play when a batter deliberately blocks or distracts the fielding side from completing a play, such as a run-out. While accidental contact is often overlooked, any perceived intentional movement can lead to dismissal. In Raghuvanshi's case, the third umpire concluded that his movement was not entirely natural, leading to the decision going in favour of Lucknow Super Giants.

The decision triggered visible frustration in the Kolkata Knight Riders camp. Players and support staff in the dugout appeared stunned, with many questioning the interpretation of intent. Raghuvanshi himself reacted emotionally, slamming his bat and throwing his helmet in disappointment as he made his way back to the pavilion. His dismissal came at a crucial juncture, leaving KKR further under pressure after already losing four wickets.

Raghuvanshi's dismissal has now joined a very short list of similar incidents in IPL history, making it only the fourth time a batter has been given out for obstructing the field in the tournament: Yusuf Pathan (KKR) vs PWI, 2013; Amit Mishra (Delhi) vs SRH, 2019; Ravindra Jadeja (CSK) vs RR, 2024; and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (KKR) vs LSG, 2026.

Given how uncommon this mode of dismissal is, it has naturally sparked debate among fans and experts alike, particularly around the interpretation of intent.

The incident came during a high-pressure match for both sides. Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders entered the game struggling near the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table. LSG had managed just two wins from seven matches, while KKR had only one victory in the same number of games. With playoff hopes hanging by a thread, every moment in the match carried added significance. Raghuvanshi's wicket, therefore, proved to be a major turning point, further denting KKR's chances of posting a competitive total.
