Bayreuth Festival Opens with Strong Stance Against Antisemitism and Warning on Democracy

The Bayreuth Festival’s opening ceremonies marked a significant shift in its culture of remembrance, explicitly addressing the Nazi regime’s impact on Jewish artists and warning against the dangers of antisemitism and erosion of democracy.

Michel Friedman, a German-Jewish author whose family was largely murdered in the Holocaust, delivered a powerful speech during the “Silenced Voices” commemoration, urging active resistance against hatred and passivity. His words emphasized the festival’s new direction under Katharina Wagner, who also spoke out against her family’s Nazi ties and the current threats to German democracy.

The event featured a memorial for Jewish artists persecuted under the Nazis, with names read aloud and a prayer recited. Chancellor Friedrich Merz reflected on Wagner’s legacy as a symbol of Germany’s complex history, highlighting the festival as a space for national self-reflection.
