لماذا يهم

Colossal Biosciences is a biotech company focused on de-extinction. They previously claimed success in resurrecting the dire wolf. The challenge for resurrecting large extinct birds is the lack of suitable modern surrogate mothers for their large eggs.

Colossal Biosciences, a biotech company based in Texas, USA, is dedicated to resurrecting extinct creatures such as the thylacine, dodo, and mammoth, and even claimed to have "resurrected" the prehistoric species dire wolf last year, attracting global attention from the scientific community and the world. Recently, Colossal Biosciences announced that it has successfully hatched chicks using "artificial eggs" (artificial egg), believing this technological breakthrough will help resurrect extinct birds.

According to comprehensive foreign media reports, Colossal Biosciences' latest statement indicates that the research team used 3D printing technology to create highly realistic artificial eggs made of titanium metal. The interior is lined with a bionic silicone membrane to simulate the oxygen transport method of real chicken eggs. The results not only surpassed the oxygen supply efficiency of ordinary eggs but also overcame the problems encountered in the 1980s' flightless bird experiments, where artificial oxygen supply caused damage to embryonic DNA. A total of 26 chick embryos were successfully hatched from these artificial eggs.

Colossal Biosciences CEO and co-founder Ben Lamm stated that the 26 hatched chicks are in very good health and will be arranged to live and grow naturally in the company's avian research facility. Regarding this breakthrough technology, Lamm estimates that it may be possible to resurrect the extinct bird "dodo" within the next 4 to 5 years, and even attempt to bring the large flightless bird "moa" (Dinornithidae) back to New Zealand by 2030.

Reports indicate that current technology for restoring mammals like dire wolves and mammoths can utilize modern animals with similar genes as surrogate mothers. However, large extinct birds face the predicament of having no modern birds capable of accommodating and hatching their giant eggs. For example, the moa could reach a height of 13 feet (approximately 4 meters) and weigh 500 pounds (approximately 227 kilograms), with eggs that are 8 times larger than those of the Emu, the second-largest bird species in the world.

Colossal Biosciences Chief Science Officer Beth Shapiro pointed out that avian reproductive technology has lagged behind mammalian reproductive technology for many years. Now that the artificial egg technology experiment has been successful, and it has been confirmed that it can be reused and applied to different egg sizes, the team plans to conduct tests with Emus and ostriches next.

Regarding Colossal Biosciences' approach, most other scientists remain reserved. Some believe that the resurrection technology they are vigorously promoting is, at best, introducing modern organisms into fragmented ancient DNA of extinct creatures, and is not a true resurrection of those ancient creatures. Some ornithologists believe that Colossal Biosciences' latest hatching technology could be used in fields such as conservation of currently endangered bird species, which would be more practical than resurrecting extinct creatures.
