Cabo Verde Goalkeeper Vozinha Becomes Commercial Star After World Cup Heroics

Some of China’s biggest companies are chasing the signature of Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, hoping to harness the commercial power of the African player’s World Cup heroics.

The 40-year-old, whose man of the match performance in a goalless draw with Spain last week catapulted him to global stardom, has become an internet sensation, attracting more social media followers than some of the biggest names in sport, including NBA star Kevin Durant and NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

With China referee Ma Ning reportedly expected to earn 10 million yuan (US$1.48 million) from endorsements, Vozinha could likewise earn several millions from various deals.

Speaking to Brazilian media, Bernardo Vasconcelos, the player’s agent, said Vozinha, whose Instagram following jumped from 50,000 to more than 14 million almost overnight, was now being tracked by several high-profile firms, and “many teams”.

“To be honest, these past few days have been difficult for him to manage,” Vasconcelos said. “Even though Vozinha is very calm and manages to keep his feet on the ground, the noise after his World Cup debut has been very loud.

“In the past few days, proposals have already emerged for Vozinha to do all sorts of things, many from Brazilian companies. But not only them; the biggest communication and advertising agencies in Europe and China also want to work with him.
