Coleman Wong has reached the semi-finals of an ATP Tour event for the first time, after beating Jenson Brooksby in straight sets at the Mifel Open on Thursday.

The Hongkonger backed up his surprise quarter-finals victory over top seed Jiri Lehecka a day earlier, with a 6-1, 7-5 win over the world No 77 in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Wong’s victory also made another slice of tennis history, becoming the first player from the city to break into the top 100 in the world.

The 22-year-old played aggressively throughout his one-hour, 29-minute encounter against Brooksby. Wong finished having won 82 per cent of his first-serve points and saved all four of the break points he faced.

With the victory, Wong rose 12 spots to No 90 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and is set for a career-high when the updated list is released Monday.

Up next is Frenchman Arthur Gea, who will also be playing in his first ATP Tour semi-final after shocking third seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-7, 6-4, 6-0.
