A consortium led by Amit Bhatia, backed by the Lakshmi Mittal family, is in talks to acquire a "significant" minority stake in Liverpool Football Club in a deal that could value the English Premier League side at more than $6 billion, the Financial Times (FT) reported on Tuesday.

The investor group has hired advisers to work on the proposed investment and is in active discussions with Liverpool's US owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the report added.

FSG confirmed the consortium's interest to the FT, saying a group "led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia," the British-Indian businessman, had expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in the club.

FT, citing people familiar with the talks, said that no agreement had been reached and there was no certainty the discussions would result in a transaction.

If completed, the deal would value Liverpool at more than $6 billion, making it one of the biggest valuations for a football club.

Bhatia declined to comment, the report said. He is the son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal.

The potential investment would be the latest high-profile deal in English football, following the 2022 takeover of Chelsea FC and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's purchase of a minority stake in Manchester United in 2023, which valued Liverpool's arch-rivals at more than $6.3 billion, including debt.

Liverpool has been owned by FSG since 2010, when the US-based sports investment group, controlled by American billionaire John Henry, acquired the club for £300 million.

FSG also owns Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, led a $1.5 billion investment into the commercial arm of the PGA Tour in 2024, and sold the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey franchise last year for $1.7 billion, FT said.

Ahead of the proposed Liverpool investment, Bhatia agreed to transfer his shareholding in Queens Park Rangers, which plays in England's second-tier Championship, to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam, the FT reported. The move is intended to avoid holding stakes in two football clubs.

The talks also come two months after the Mittal family agreed to acquire a minority stake in Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals.

Liverpool is among the world's most successful football clubs, having won the UEFA Champions League six times and a joint-record 20 English league titles. The club reported record revenue of more than £700 million in the 2024-25 season, up from £613 million a year earlier, with commercial partners including Standard Chartered, Adidas and Google Pixel, the FT reported.

أسئلة مفتوحة

  • Will the discussions result in a transaction?
  • What is the exact size of the minority stake?

India's Consumption Boom: Experiences Over Savings, But At What Cost?

India's consumption patterns have dramatically shifted from basic needs to experiences and lifestyle choices, now driving nearly 60% of the country's GDP. While this boom is visible across urban and rural areas, fueled by rising incomes and aspirations, it also raises concerns about increasing household debt and financial insecurity, particularly among younger generations who prioritize immediate gratification over long-term savings.
